English 110 was by far my favorite class among the classes I’ve taken. It has had a personal impact on me and changed the way I do my work. I’ve met my closest friends in that class and it was a great class to transition from high school to college. This class allowed me to think freely and voice my opinions, concerns and knowledge. With the assistance of Professor Brener I have considered following the path of an educator as a career.
Among the many assignments, the literary narrative assignment was my favorite. I was reading Timothy Ferris’ book The 4 Hour Workweek at the time. It’s a book that has exposed the flaws in conventional beliefs, principles, and ways of living. Most importantly, though, it has given me insight into how to genuinely be free and flee the rat race. The literary narrative provided me with the ideal platform to express my recently acquired information. When the professor read my essay aloud to the class, that was the turning point that made this assignment my favorite assignment. My “art of eating spaghetti” moment had just occurred. I remembered the short essay we read in class called “the art of eating spaghetti” and I went through the same thing the author had gone through. The author wrote an essay which his teacher read out loud to the class. It inspired him to write more and professor Brener inspired me to write more. For the first time, I felt proud of my work, which encouraged me to work hard on my upcoming assignments. This assignment helped me get recognized by my classmates and it was a great conversation started with new people.
For the following assignments, making an assignment personal in the same way as the literary narrative was the most difficult part of this course. Making the research-based article personal and relevant was challenging. After discussing my problem with the professor, she gave me the option of choosing an artifact that had personal significance for me. This greatly facilitated the process. One thing I learned was how crucial it is to personalize your projects in order to pique your interest. It made the work seem easy, and I became motivated and proud of the work I was accomplishing.
During this class I acquired many skills and polished old skills. I focused on the social aspects of the writing process. The people that I’ve met in this class have heavily influenced me in the way I write my papers. After reading many of my peers’ papers, I learned the importance of telling a personal story and attaching it to a theme. It helps you emphasize your point and its thought provoking. I also learned how to use different tools and applications that help you use a wide variety of vocabulary to make you sound professional and fluent.
My perspective on English class has clearly evolved as a result of this class. English class was a great way to express my viewpoints and hear out other people. I hope to take these newly acquired skills and use them in the near future.
